I KNOW I CAN EAT IT BUT IS IT REALLY FOOD?

There was a time when my only prerequisite for “food” was; it tastes good, it’s cheap, there’s a lot of it and it makes a solid turd. I’ve matured somewhat since then. I look at what I’m about to put into my mouth and I ask myself, “I Know I Can Eat This But Is It Really Food?” Not just does it smell good, look good, taste good, but will this stuff feed the cells of my body. Will this help keep me healthy?

I now actually want the stuff that I put into my body to actually qualify as “Food”.

There is, of course, a definition for “Food”.

Food |fo͞od| noun any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink, or that plants absorb, in order to maintain life and growth.

Hmmm, “nutritious substance” “in order to maintain life and growth”? Will that Big Mac or 2 slices of pepperoni pizza (I’ve never eaten one slice of pizza in my life) provide the nutrition I need to maintain Life? I mean without Life what do I have?

Face it, we have become a nation of people that are too lazy to take the time to prepare our own meals. We depend on fast and pre-packaged “Fake Food”. It’s Fake because there is no real Nutrition. When you fill your gut with empty calories we end up overfed and undernourished. The Standard American Diet is SAD.

If people ask me if I’m a vegan or a vegetarian, I tell them no I’m a Nutritarian, it’s a term coined by Dr. Joel Furhman and it simply means to eat the most nutrient dense food per calorie that you can. This makes sense to me.

When people want to call me a “Health Nut” as an insult like it was a bad thing. Wouldn’t I be nuts if I didn’t care about my health? I try to point out that I care about what I eat and not what they eat. If they want to know I tell them, if they want to try it I let them. But, I can’t care more about their health than they do.

As far as my other criteria, taste, cost, quantity, and digestibility, I’m

Phil’s Italian Shepherd’s Pie

covered on all bases. Often I’ll make a pot of Chilli, or Curry or Vegetarian Shepard’s Pie and I’ll eat the same thing for several days. Now if it tasted bad I certainly wouldn’t eat it more than once, right?

I get asked, “Phil, don’t you get tired of eating the same thing every day?” My answer is, “No, and what’s so exciting that you’re eating every day?” Since I make most of my own meals I know exactly what’s in it and it always costs less than eating out where I don’t know what’s going into it.

IF IT’S SO CHEAP… WHAT’S IN IT?

I’m guessing if the meal is cheap and there’s a lot of it there’s probably not a lot of quality going in. It’s probably the cheapest thing they could find that people can still eat without getting sick.

Salads and vegetables are a lot less expensive than meat, cheese, grains, and bread. Plus, fruits and vegetables contain Fiber which not only fills you up but keeps you feeling full longer. Remember, there’s No Fiber in Meat, Eggs, Dairy, Bread or Pasta (whole wheat or not).

I think most people know what they should be eating and what they should avoid, but knowing and doing are two different things. I like the same things that everybody else does, but I choose to eat healthily as much as I possibly can. I work on the 90/10 Rule, “If you eat Healthy 90% of the time you can get away with the other 10%”.

IF YOU EAT UNHEALTHY 90% OF THE TIME YOU’RE GOING TO GET SICK

That’s not a threat, that’s just your body telling you that you’re not feeding it what it needs… FOOD.

Please take a look at the Best Worst List and see which side you’re choosing from.

Then ask yourself, “Could you make some better choices?”

That slice of tomato or the ketchup won’t put you on the right side of that 90/10 equation, you can do better.

Remember the 90/10 Rule.

As always your Comments and Questions are welcome.

Please, Share with anyone you know that cares about their health.

Thanks, very_cool
