After You’ve Lost A Lot Of Weight
That last 20. 15, 10 or 5 lbs can be a struggle and frustrating on how slowly the last little bit comes off. But, come off it must.
I know, I dropped over 65 pounds in four months back in 2012, by learning how to “Eat To Live”. But, I’ve remained (what I consider) 20 pounds overweight since then.
Part of the problem is that I feel great and people tell I look great and shouldn’t get too thin.
Whatever happened to, “You can’t be too thin or too rich!”?
The fact is, I know I need to lose 20 lbs. Dr. Fuhrman says that just 20 lbs overweight increases my chance of developing Type II Diabetes by 50%… No, thank you. I’d rather lose the weight.
If I just followed Eat To Live (ETL) to lose weight and look better I could stop now. I’m below the magic number of what I wanted to weight of 180 lbs, but I’m not even close to what My Ideal Weight should be. I’m at least 20 lbs over what I should be idealy.
ETL is about obtaining Optimum Health, to lower the risks of Weight Related Disease. In my case, that would be Cancer and Diabetes, both of which run n my family and both of which I can avoid by eating healthy. By Eating To Live!
I don’t care what program or guru you follow, I believe the secret to Permanent Weight Loss and Ideal Health is to maintain a Reasonable Caloric intake full of Nutrient Dense whole foods and to engage in Moderate Daily Exercise.
Following ETL allows me to do that. My exercise regime could not be simpler, mostly it’s 30 minutes of Walking/Jogging/Running every day, and Resistance training for ten to fifteen minutes just three times per week. I work out at an Intense level for a short period of time.
The Less You Have To Lose The Harder It Seems
That’s called “Self-Preservation”. Your body is trying to hold onto the Fat in case there’s going to be a famine. It’s not your body working against you, it’s trying to protect you. I’ve lost at times a pound a day, now a pound a week would be great.
The less you have to lose the slower it comes off and the harder it can seem… But, is it harder?
No, but it can sure seem like it is. If you’re on a nutrition program you like and enjoy, if you don’t feel that you’re being deprived or missing anything in your life, then it’s not hard. You just have to stick with what works and be patient.
Maybe you just need to tighten up your game a bit. Eating less than what makes you feel satisfied is never the answer. Eat less and Exercise more is just flat out BS. But, there may still be certain better choices you could be making.
Traps & Pitfalls
I tell people when they start on “Eat To Live”… “If you even think you’re hungry… Eat! But, Eat Real Food!”
In the beginning of ETL, if they stick to GBOMBS, and make a Big Salad the main part of your meal you’re eating so much good food, it’s almost impossible to overeat. It’s a naturally low calorie way to eat, without ever having to count a calorie, or carbs or protein or fat.
But, you can overeat when you get down to the last weight to lose.
My pitfalls are Nuts and Avocados. Nuts are like Crack to me. Nuts and Avocados are Good Fats, and we all need fats. Still too much of a good thing is still too much. I know that 2 ounces of each is as much as I should eat in a day. If I take in more than that, shame on me.
What I do is I buy a larger container of nuts, I’ll take two handfuls and put them in individual plastic bags and have only one bag a day. If I can’t stick to just eating that one bag a day, I don’t buy them.
Same thing with Avocados. If my wife doesn’t want to eat ½ of one I don’t cut it. Or I’ll make Guacamole and only eat half.
It’s As Simple As That!
In the beginning with ETL, I say eat more fruit, any fruit. Figuring any fruit is better for you than a bagel, jelly donut or a bag of chips. But, some fruits are better for you and weight loss and health than others.
That’s why GBOMBS are Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries and Seeds (and as little as possible of everything else).
It’s Berries and not Fruit and Seeds and not Nuts. So, more seeds (Flax, Hemp, Sunflower and my new favorite CHIA), and fewer nuts.
More berries and less fruit. Think, high Antioxidants and Low Glycemic!
What are your Pitfalls?
If you can’t limit them, don’t buy them.
Make Minor Changes
You already know how to lose weight. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel when you get down to the last 5, 10, 15, 20 lbs. Stick with the Nutrition Plan (I hate the word DIET) that got you this far. Why change horses?
I’ve been on Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s “Eat To Live” program for over three years. Strict on ‘Eat To Live’ for 6 Weeks at a time, means Salads as My Main Meal and G.B.O.M.B.S. as much as I want and as little as possible of everything else.
That means:
NO; Meat, Fish, Eggs, GMO’s… Packaged food or Eating out… or MICROWAVE!
Nothing where I don’t know what’s in it or how it was prepared…
If it was Made In A Factory… I’ll PASS!
With the exception of; Ground Flaxseed, Mustard, Vinegar, & BioTrust and Dr. Fuhrman’s Men’s Daily Formula +D3 Multivitamin & Minerals
I eat ORGANIC as much as possible.
I drink only filtered Fluoride and Chlorine free Mineral Water, which is also used to make our coffee and tea.
Right now, I’m eating Superfoods about 90% of the time and looking to improve on that. How much of what you eat are Superfoods, and where could you improve?
You’ve probably already gotten results from eating more healthy and by exercising, but if you refuse to break or control your addictions to Salt, Sugar, Wheat, Oils, Meat, Dairy, Junk and Processed Foods… Guess what happens… and will always happen? Don’t think for one second they’re not addictions, if you can’t give them up when you know you should… they’re Addictions.
If you don’t know that they are unhealthy then you have something you need to learn. If you tell me what you Eat… I’ll tell you why you’re Sick!
I Don’t Know What Your Goals Are
I hope they are to live as long and as healthy as you possibly can. That you enjoy every meal that you have and look forward to every workout. That you take full responsibility for your health and happiness. There’s things we can control in life and there are things that we can’t. What we put in our faces and how much we move, should be things we can control.
Losing the last 5 pounds, 10 pounds, 20 pounds, 50 or 100 pounds, we can control. Maybe not as fast as we like, but if we like what we’re doing and we’re moving in the right direction it shouldn’t matter when. Enjoy the journey.
